Diagnostics & Fault Finding

Dealer-level diagnostics and honest fault finding on every major brand. We read the data, find the real fault, and quote a fixed price before any spanner moves.

When 'check engine' isn't enough

Modern cars throw fault codes for dozens of reasons — some obvious, many misleading. A P0299 boost deviation code can mean a split hose, a stuck wastegate, a failing turbo, a boost sensor, a leaking intercooler, a failing solenoid or a software bug. Guessing at parts is expensive. Diagnosing properly isn't.

Slick Autos runs genuine dealer-level diagnostic tools — Mercedes XENTRY, BMW ISTA, Porsche PIWIS III, VW/Audi ODIS — alongside generic high-end platforms. That means we can read every control module in your car, log live data on the road, and follow the manufacturer's own guided fault-finding procedures.

Based just off the M4 in the Slough / Iver SL0 area, we serve drivers across Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and West London — including Langley, Windsor, Staines, Uxbridge and Maidenhead.

DPF, EGR and emissions repair

Blocked DPFs and stuck EGR valves are two of the most common and most misdiagnosed diesel problems. A 'DPF blocked' warning is almost always a symptom of something else — a failing sensor, a glow plug issue, a short-journey driving pattern or a software fault. We diagnose the root cause first, then carry out a proper forced regeneration or physical clean if required.

We never offer DPF removal — that's an MOT failure and an emissions offence in the UK. What we do offer is the correct repair, done once.

Rolling road data logging

For drivability issues that only appear under load — hesitation at 4,000 rpm, misfires under boost, turbo flutter, gearbox jolts in certain ratios — we use the rolling road as a diagnostic tool. Full live logging, multiple runs, everything recorded. We then read the data and work backwards to the fault.

Written diagnosis, fixed quote

Every diagnostic job ends with a written report and a fixed-price quote for the repair. No 'we'll just start with the spark plugs and see'. You get a clear picture of what's wrong, what needs doing, and what it will cost — before we touch anything.

  • Dealer-level diagnostic scans (XENTRY / ISTA / PIWIS / ODIS)
  • Live data logging on road or rolling road
  • DPF diagnosis and forced regeneration
  • EGR diagnosis, cleaning and replacement
  • Electrical fault finding with proper schematics
  • Written diagnostic report and fixed-price repair quote

Symptoms we see

If any of these match your car, this is the service for you. Book a diagnostic and we’ll confirm the fault in writing before touching anything.

  • Engine warning light with no obvious cause
  • Limp mode appearing intermittently
  • Hesitation or flat spot at a specific RPM
  • Another garage couldn't pin the fault down
  • Pre-purchase inspection needed before committing
  • Mystery noise, vibration or smell
  • MOT emissions failure
Our process

How we run this job.

Every service follows the same disciplined sequence. No steps skipped, no surprises on the final bill.

  1. STEP 015 min

    Initial phone triage

Describe the fault to us on the phone. We can often tell you whether it needs a standard 1-hour slot or a longer logging session.

  2. STEP 0245 min

    Full module scan

Dealer-tool scan on the correct platform (XENTRY / ISTA / ODIS / PIWIS). Every control unit, every code, every soft fault logged.

  3. STEP 031 hour

    Live data + test

Road or rolling-road test with live logging on the parameters that matter for the fault. We record everything for review.

  4. STEP 0430 min

    Root cause analysis

We analyse the data, cross-reference against known patterns, and identify the specific fault (not just the code).

  5. STEP 05Same day

    Written report + quote

Full written diagnostic report with a fixed-price quote for the repair. If the repair goes ahead here, the diagnostic fee is waived.

Before you book

What to bring

A quick checklist to make your visit run smoothly. Nothing fancy — just the things that save time at drop-off.

  • A clear description of when the fault occurs
  • Any fault codes you've already seen (from a generic reader)
  • Photos or video of warning lights where possible
  • Recent service history / previous repair invoices
  • At least 1 hour for a standard diagnostic; more for intermittent faults
  • Patience — the right answer takes longer than a guess

Frequently asked

Straight answers.

How much does a diagnostic cost?

A standard diagnostic is £75 + VAT and includes a full scan of every module, a short road test, and a written report. If you go ahead with the repair at Slick Autos, the diagnostic fee is waived and rolled into the job.

Another garage couldn't find the fault — can you?

Often, yes. Most missed faults come down to two things: the wrong diagnostic tool, and not enough patience. We run genuine dealer-level tools for Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and VW Group, and we allocate enough time to log the fault properly — not just clear the codes and hope.

Will you remove or delete my DPF?

No. DPF removal is illegal for road use in the UK, it fails the MOT, and it's an emissions offence. What we will do is diagnose why your DPF is blocked, fix the underlying cause, and carry out a proper regeneration or clean.

Can you diagnose intermittent faults?

Yes, but be realistic with the timescale. An intermittent fault that appears once a week needs the right logging setup on the car for long enough to catch it. We'll talk you through the plan before we start.

Do you work on warning lights and drivability issues only?

No — we also diagnose noises, vibrations, clutch and gearbox complaints, brake faults and suspension problems. If it's wrong with your car, we can diagnose it.

How much diagnostic time do I need to book?

Most diagnostic jobs fit into a standard 1-hour slot. Intermittent faults, drivability complaints and complex electrical issues sometimes need a half-day slot for proper logging — we'll advise at booking based on what you describe over the phone.

Can you scan a car I'm thinking of buying?

Yes — pre-purchase inspection is one of our most common diagnostic jobs. Full dealer-tool scan, compression check, visual under-body inspection, test drive, and a written report telling you whether the asking price is fair and what (if anything) needs doing. £150 + VAT, done in 1.5 hours.

Do you offer rolling road diagnostics for drivability faults?

Yes. For faults that only appear under load — hesitation at a specific RPM, turbo flutter, misfires under boost — we use the rolling road as a diagnostic tool with full live logging. Much more effective than road testing because we can hold a specific load point for as long as we need.
